Domain names are unique for all sites on the world wide web. You want one that is synonomous with your company name or better yet, to actually be your company name if available.  Names can be a maximum of 26 positions in length which includes the .com. 

Domain names are given out on a first come - first serve basis and are maintained by an international regulatory committee called InterNic.  Presently there are many organizations,  (NetWork Solutions, www.register.com), that act as the agents for setting up and processing domain name applications. 

In any event, you want a name that is or closely resembles your company name.  The current database can be checked to see if the name you want is available.  Yes, you can choose a name if it is available, and have it registered before your site is even up and running.  The fee varies depending on the domain registration organization with $35 per year being the maximum and newer organizations charging about $15 per year.  The domain must be renewed each year or whenever your renewal term is due.  The domain name is yours as long as you keep re-registering it, NOBODY else can use it. 

Domain names are actually masks for IP addresses which are a series of four numbers separated by periods.  This address represents a server location, which is a computer where your site resides.  Since it is hard to remember 4 separate numbers,  a domain name is used and is a whole lot easier to remember.   This name is what you type into your browser's address line.

Once an application for an available name is submitted, it will usually be granted and set up within 48 hours.  From that point you have 30 days to pay the registration fee which is for the desired time period.  That fee can be paid directly to B&B Web Feats along with a $10 "legwork" charge.  The fee will then be passed on to domain registration agent for processing.
